Its true that practice will allow you to learn or develop new tricks and refine technical aspects of riding or tactical elements of racing; but functional strength training will allow you to improve and precisely integrate your strength, quickness, coordination and flexibility to perform tricks or ride/race longer without fatigue, absorb impact/landing loads and reduce your risk of injury when you do wipe out. 

It’s also true that most trainers use bodybuilding and endurance training methods; this will do nothing to improve your performance, but it will get boring, make you slower and predispose you to injury.
